Kourtaliotis Gorge

Gorge Kourtaliotis or Kourtaliotiko located south of Rethymno, 22km from Rethymno and length 3km. It is one of the most spectacular natural attractions of Rethymnon. Starting from the village Koxare and flows between the mountains Kouroupis (984 m) and Dry Mountain (904m). The huge cliffs of the canyon reach 600 meters and is full of openings and caves, home to important species of fauna. From inside passes Kourtaliotis River that runs through part of the gorge and flows into Lake Preveli. In his latest piece called Big River.

When strong wind blows, it creates whistles passing through the hollows of the rocks, which resemble Kourtali (rattles) to beat, so named Kourtaliotiko.
